Washer Vibration and Shaking: Fixes in Order of Cost

A washer that walks on the spin cycle is unevenly loaded, standing on unlevelled feet, still carrying its shipping bolts, or worn in the suspension. Three of those four cost nothing to rule out, and when the shaking started tells you which.

A washer that marches across the laundry floor on the spin cycle is, in descending order of likelihood, unevenly loaded, standing on feet nobody levelled, still bolted for shipping, or worn out in the suspension. The first three cost nothing but ten minutes, and between them they account for most of it. The fourth is a real repair, and there is a way to tell before you pay anybody to come and look.

Start with the question that sorts this fastest, which is not what the machine is doing but when it started.

When it began, and what that rules out

Brand new, or just moved. Suspect the transit bolts before anything else. Front-loading machines ship with bolts through the back panel that clamp the drum solid so it cannot swing in a lorry, and they have to come out at installation. Left in, the drum has no travel at all and every bit of spin energy goes straight into the cabinet and the floor. It is violent, it is unmistakable, and it damages the machine if it is allowed to continue. Look at the rear panel: the holes the bolts came out of usually take blanking caps that were in the same bag as the manual.

Gradually, over years. That is wear. Dampers, springs or suspension rods lose their control a little at a time, so the household adjusts to it and nobody can say when it changed. Counterweight bolts also work loose slowly and give a knock rather than a shake.

Suddenly, this week, with no load pattern to it. Something moved. A machine slid back hard against its hoses, a foot that was never locked has vibrated its way down, or a floor covering has compressed. Re-level before assuming a part.

The ten-minute sequence

Do these in order. Each one is free, and each one removes a suspect.

  1. Empty the drum and run a spin on its own. An empty machine that still shakes is not a loading problem, and you have just cut the list in half.
  2. Push the top corners diagonally. Both hands, opposite corners, a firm push. A machine that rocks on two feet is not level, whatever the floor looks like.
  3. Level it properly. A spirit level across the top, front to back and side to side. Every foot wound down until it takes weight, then the locknut brought up hard against the cabinet — a foot that is set correctly and not locked will simply undo itself again. If the rear legs are the self-levelling type, tip the machine forward a few inches and set it back down to reset them; the manual will say which sort you have.
  4. Check what it is standing on. Vinyl over a springy plywood subfloor, or a machine sitting half on and half off a threshold strip, will defeat a perfect levelling job.
  5. Slide it back without trapping anything. Hoses pinched behind the machine hold it forward off its feet, and a drain hose pressed hard against a wall transmits every vibration into the studwork.

If it is quiet after that, the fault was installation and there is nothing to buy.

When the floor is the real problem

Out here it often is. A laundry on the second floor of a newer custom build sits on joists spanning a long way, and a machine placed in the middle of a bay is loading the springiest point of the whole span. The same machine moved a few feet, so it sits over or close to a bearing wall, can go from alarming to unremarkable without a single part changing.

Older houses have the opposite arrangement and their own version of the problem: laundry in a rear ell or on a basement slab, where the floor is rigid and the noise goes into the room instead of into the structure. That is a machine you hear rather than feel, and pads or a rubber mat genuinely help.

Two other adjustments are worth knowing. A sheet of plywood cut to size under the machine spreads the load across more than one joist. And the spin speed is a setting, not a fixed property — dropping from the highest speed to the next one down trades a little dryness for a large reduction in the forces involved, and on a bouncy upstairs floor that trade is often the right one.

The three faults that need parts

Worn dampers or springs, on a front loader. The drum assembly hangs on springs and is controlled by shock absorbers. When those give up, the drum swings freely instead of settling. The test: with the machine empty, push the drum firmly downward at the front and let go. It should come back up and stop, near enough in one movement. If it bounces two or three times before settling, the damping has gone.

Tired suspension rods, on a top loader. Four rods carry the tub, and their damping cups wear. The tell is a specific one: banging at one particular point on the way up to full spin speed, which then settles once the machine is past it, plus a tub that will sit visibly off centre after a heavy wash rather than returning to the middle.

Bearings. A rumble or a roar that rises and falls with the drum speed, still there as the machine coasts down after the spin ends, is the outer tub bearing. Grip the drum and try to move it up and down and in and out — real play, or a gritty feel as it turns by hand, confirms it. On many machines the bearing is pressed into a sealed outer tub, and the labour to reach it is where the repair-or-replace conversation usually begins. That is worth knowing before the visit rather than after.

A knocking that only happens under load, with no play in the drum and normal spin noise, is often just a counterweight bolt backing off. It is a cheap thing to check and an easy one to miss.

What not to do

Do not shim the machine level with folded card or timber offcuts. Shims compress and shift, and the machine goes back out of level within a fortnight. Do not strap or brace it to the wall — the suspension is meant to absorb that energy, and taking it away sends it somewhere else. And do not keep running loads that you know come out badly imbalanced. Every one of those cycles is spent wearing out the parts in the section above.

The machine only shakes on one particular load. Is that still a fault?
Almost never. A single duvet, a bath mat with a rubber backing, or three heavy towels that have wound into one rope all put the load off centre in a way a light mixed wash never does. Modern machines try to redistribute and re-ramp several times before giving up, which is why one bad load takes so much longer to spin than the rest. Split the load, or run bulky single items with a couple of lighter things for company.
Are anti-vibration pads worth buying?
They are worth buying after the machine is level, and worth nothing before it. Pads absorb the residual buzz that a correctly set-up machine still transmits into a hard floor. Put them under a machine that is rocking on two feet and you have added a soft layer to an unstable base, which usually makes the walking worse rather than better. Level first, then decide whether you still have a problem.
How loud is too loud during the spin?
Volume matters less than what the sound does. A steady rush that rises and falls smoothly with the drum speed is normal. A rumble or roar that tracks the speed up and back down again, still audible as the drum coasts to a stop, is bearing noise. A rhythmic bang that appears at one particular point on the way up to full speed, then settles, is suspension. Those are three different conversations.
