How it gets described on the phone
The complaint, in the caller's words
- Fresh food side sits well above 40 degrees while the freezer stays cold
- Compressor runs without cycling off and the floor near the grille feels warm
- A vacuum-tight door that will not reseal properly after being opened
- Water pooling underneath the crisper drawers
On the visit
What gets measured before anything is replaced
- Fresh food and freezer compartment temperatures, logged over a full cycle
- Condenser condition and airflow at the grille, front and rear
- Evaporator fan behaviour and frost pattern on both circuits
- Door seal compression, hinge alignment and closer travel
- Stored fault history and sensor readings off the control board

What these repairs come to, before you ask
Flat $95 service call covering the visit and full diagnosis, credited against the repair once you approve it.
Typical all-in totals for the repairs that come up most often out here — parts and labour together, from the low end of a straightforward job to the high end of an awkward one. Which end of a band a particular unit lands on is what the visit establishes.
- Door gasket or seal replacement $270 – $770
- Evaporator or condenser fan motor $300 – $650
- Defrost heater, thermostat or sensor $310 – $720
- Ice maker, water valve or supply line $280 – $720
- Electronic control board $520 – $900
- Compressor or sealed-system repair $970 – $2,190
Against replacing it
$8,630 – $20,330
That is the appliance alone. Set the repair band beside it before deciding — on a built-in, the cabinetry usually decides the argument rather than the compressor.
Where those replacement figures come from
A comparable built-in refrigerator, appliance only — before delivery, installation, custom panels or cabinetry work. Undercounter and wine units sit below this band; a column replacement is usually two purchases rather than one.
Four things decide where inside a band a job lands:
- Which part failed A door gasket, an evaporator fan and a sealed-system component are three different orders of job. Until the fault is found, any number would be a guess.
- Whether the part is still made Current models are straightforward. Older units sometimes need a superseded part sourced, and that changes both the price and the timeline.
- How the unit is installed A panelled column in a run of cabinetry takes longer to get at than a freestanding unit with clearance on both sides. Access is real labour.
- What else is close to failing If a second component is visibly on the way out, you hear about it while the unit is open rather than on a second call.

The second unit in the back pantry had been creeping up for weeks and we blamed the door being opened too often. It was a seized evaporator fan motor. He showed me the shaft before fitting the new one, then vacuumed the whole coil area out before he left.

Integrated column behind cabinet panels off High Street, short cycling badly. Dirty condenser plus a hinge that had dropped enough to hold the door a hair open.

Our built-in stopped holding temperature on the fresh food side. The condenser behind the lower grille was packed with dust off the gravel drive and the fan bearing had gone dry. Cleaned, fan swapped, normal by lunch.

Where
Sub-Zero Refrigerator Repair across the four towns
Each town has its own page with the housing and access notes that actually change how a call runs out there.
-
Sherborn
Sherborn holds two-acre zoning and virtually no commercial strip, so the housing runs to antique colonials and shingled custom homes set well back in the trees. Renovated kitchens often sit at the rear of the house with a butler's pantry or a second undercounter unit off to one side.
-
Medfield
Medfield pairs a compact village centre of 19th-century houses with post-war and 1990s subdivisions out toward the Charles. Kitchen work in the older centre houses tends to be a full gut with integrated refrigeration and tight galley clearances on either side.
-
Dover
Dover is large-lot country: long driveways, older farmhouses and newer custom builds spread thinly along the Charles. Kitchens are big and frequently carry a second refrigeration unit in a pantry or mudroom.
-
Westwood
Westwood mixes Islington's older village housing with wooded subdivisions off High Street. The newer kitchens are open-plan with island seating, and refrigeration is nearly always integrated behind cabinet panels.
