Viking ventilation: hoods, blowers and the noises they make
A hood that has gone quiet, gone loud, or gone stuck on one speed is nearly always the blower, the control or the damper — in roughly that order of likelihood, and the noise it makes usually says which.

Find out where the blower actually is first
Professional ventilation is sold as three arrangements and they fail differently, so the first question is which one is above your range. An internal blower sits in the hood canopy itself and is the loudest of the three in the room. An in-line blower lives in the duct run, often in the attic or a soffit, so a bearing starting to go is heard as a distant drone rather than as anything obviously coming from the kitchen. An exterior blower is mounted on the roof or an outside wall, and that one weathers.
It matters because a rattle that appears in a gale, or the first cold week, or after a roofer has been on site, points hard at an exterior unit or its damper rather than at anything inside the house. Knowing which arrangement you have also tells you whether the fix is a twenty-minute job at the hood or an access problem in an attic.
Symptoms
Noise, one speed only, and lights that have gone
A hum with no rotation, especially if the fan starts when nudged, is the classic run-capacitor picture and it should not be left running: a stalled motor is drawing current and going nowhere. A whine or grinding that gets worse over weeks is bearings. A rhythmic flutter, present only when the fan is on, is usually the backdraft damper — the flap that stops outside air blowing back down the duct — sticking or grease-loaded and no longer seating.
Loss of speed control while the fan itself still runs is a different circuit again: on a hood with electronic touch controls that is the control board or the membrane behind the panel, and on a hood with a mechanical rotary switch it is nearly always the switch. Lights that fail together point at their transformer or supply rather than at the lamps themselves; a single dead lamp is only a lamp.
Safe to do before calling anyone
- Pull the baffle filters and degrease them properly. Loaded baffles rob capture and unbalance the fan, and they are the single most common reason a hood "stopped working well".
- Look at the damper flap where you can reach it, and check it is free to swing rather than glued shut with old grease.
- Check the breaker, and whether the lights and the fan have failed together — if both are dead it is supply, not the blower.

When nothing is broken and it still does not clear the kitchen
Plenty of ventilation complaints are not faults. A long duct run, too many elbows, an undersized duct or a crushed flexible section all raise static pressure, and a blower rated for a straight run simply cannot deliver its numbers through that. The symptom is a hood that is loud and ineffective at once, which is the giveaway — moving air noisily and not moving much of it.
The other half of that story is makeup air. A tightly built house cannot supply a powerful hood with the air it wants to throw outside, and the fan ends up fighting the building. If the hood clears the kitchen fine with a window cracked, that is the answer, and no repair will change it.
