The ideal refrigerator temperature is 35-38 degrees Fahrenheit (1.7-3.3 degrees Celsius). The freezer should be set to 0 degrees Fahrenheit (-18 degrees Celsius). These temperatures keep food safe while minimizing energy consumption.

A refrigerator running constantly typically indicates dirty condenser coils, faulty door gaskets, incorrect temperature settings, or high ambient temperature. Clean the condenser coils first, then check door seals and temperature settings. If the problem persists, professional service may be needed.

Clean condenser coils every 6-12 months under normal conditions. If you have pets or live in a dusty environment, clean them every 3-4 months. Dirty coils are the most common cause of cooling problems and can increase energy consumption by 25%.

Water inside the refrigerator usually indicates a clogged defrost drain. During defrost cycles, water should drain to a pan underneath. If the drain is blocked with ice or debris, water backs up. Clear the drain with warm water and a soft brush.

Some sounds are normal (soft humming, occasional clicking, gurgling). However, loud buzzing, grinding, or constant clicking indicate problems. Grinding often means fan issues, while clicking may indicate compressor relay problems. Have unusual noises evaluated promptly.

With doors closed, a full freezer stays cold for 48 hours (24 hours if half-full). A refrigerator stays cold for 4-6 hours. Do not open doors unnecessarily. After 4+ hours above 40 degrees F, discard perishable foods.
