Preparing Your Appliances for Vacation

Whether you are spending the summer at the Cape or taking an extended trip, properly preparing your appliances can prevent problems and save energy.

Short Trips (1-2 Weeks)

Refrigerator

  • Remove perishables that will expire
  • Keep normal temperature settings
  • Turn off ice maker (optional)
  • Ensure doors close properly

Other Appliances

  • Unplug small appliances
  • Run dishwasher before leaving
  • Empty garbage disposal

Extended Absences (2+ Weeks)

Option 1: Keep Refrigerator Running (Recommended)

For Sub-Zero and premium refrigerators:

  • Remove all food
  • Clean interior thoroughly
  • Set refrigerator to 38 degrees F
  • Set freezer to 0 degrees F
  • Turn off ice maker and empty bin
  • Place baking soda boxes inside
  • Leave doors closed
  • Why keep it running:

  • Prevents moisture buildup and mold
  • Avoids seal damage
  • Maintains stable humidity
  • Faster return to normal operation
  • Option 2: Complete Shutdown

Only for very long absences (6+ months):

  • Remove all food
  • Clean interior with baking soda solution
  • Turn off and unplug
  • Leave doors propped open (prevents mold)
  • Disconnect water supply
  • Place towel under unit for condensation
  • When You Return

    After extended absence:

  • Check temperatures
  • Run water dispenser to flush line
  • Discard first batch of ice
  • Gradually restock
  • Power Outage Preparation

    Before leaving:

  • Consider a smart outlet for power loss alerts
  • Stock freezer (full freezer stays cold longer)
  • Know the location of circuit breakers
  • Proper preparation protects your appliance investment and ensures a smooth return home.
