Garbage Disposal Humming But Not Spinning: Quick Fix

A humming garbage disposal that will not spin is typically jammed. This common problem usually has a simple solution.

Understanding the Humming

When you hear humming but no grinding:

Motor is receiving power

Motor is trying to run

Something is blocking rotation

Important: Turn off immediately to prevent motor burnout.

Safe Unjamming Procedure

Step 1: Disconnect Power

Turn off wall switch

Unplug under sink OR

Turn off circuit breaker

Step 2: Try the Reset Button

Locate red button on disposal bottom:

Press firmly

Listen for click

Test operation

Step 3: Manual Rotation

Using hex wrench in bottom socket:

Insert 1/4" hex wrench in center hole

Work back and forth

Continue until freely spinning

Remove wrench

Step 4: Remove Obstruction

Looking down into disposal:

Use flashlight to identify blockage

Use tongs or pliers (NEVER hands)

Remove foreign objects

Step 5: Test

Restore power

Run cold water

Turn on disposal

Listen for normal operation

Preventing Jams

• Run cold water during use
• Feed gradually, not all at once
• Avoid fibrous foods (celery, corn husks)
• No bones, pits, or shells
• Never put grease down disposal
